Coffee in Singapore

For the uninitiated, there has been a new burst of specialized coffee places in the sunny island of Singapore. The “Third Wave Coffee”, is meant to be different from the “Second Wave Coffee”, otherwise known as Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and TCC, and also from the “First Wave Coffee”, otherwise known as kopi-tiam* coffee.

To keep track of the ever-expanding list of coffee places and cafes in Singapore, I’ve created a little google map.

Here are a few of my favourites:

1. Jewel Coffee

My all time favourite, Jewel is opened by the friendly Adrian and helmed by the very skilled Shin Hao. All milk-based coffees are double-shots, well balanced, and absolutely yummy. Food is very reasonably priced and scrumptious. Chalton’s pancakes are fluffy and come with a generous topping of syrup, strawberries and bananas. Try the (any) pasta and the egg muffin. Yum.

2. Nylon Coffee Roasters

A relatively new outfit, Nylon Coffee Roasters is run by a passionate couple, Dennis and Jiamin. They roast their own beans in a huge roaster in the back room. Their own blend El Primero, comes with 3, 5 or 7 oz of milk. Single origin brewed coffee is also available. This is a hardcore coffee place – no food to distract you from the rich flavours of coffee. Beans are available if you prefer to brew them yourself. Be warned, these run out fast. The friendly couple are very knowledgable and will engage you in a long, fascinating conversation on the finer points of coffee if you wish to know more.

3. Smitten Coffee and Tea Bar

A lovely hole-in-the wall, Smitten is the perfect place to chill by the river on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Find a spot on the long bench up by the wall and pick your choice of creamy coffee, or tea from the excellent selection of tea leaves. If you’re hungry, there’s a selection of pastries and paninis.
